Royal Wellington Golf Club

Royal Wellington Golf Club, steeped in tradition and prestige, is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected golf clubs. Located in Upper Hutt, just outside of Wellington, the club is home to a spectacular 27-hole course layout that intertwines seamlessly with the lush, native bushland and the gently flowing Hutt River.

The championship course, known as the Heretaunga Course, is a par-72 that stretches over 7,000 yards from the championship tees. Redesigned by Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson in 2013, the course boasts modern strategic elements while maintaining its classic charm. The layout features beautifully manicured fairways, strategic bunkering, and large, complex greens that are both a test and a pleasure for golfers of all abilities.

Royal Wellington is famed for its natural beauty, with tree-lined fairways that host a variety of native bird species and the serene backdrop of the surrounding hills. The course layout includes several standout holes, such as the 3rd and 16th, both of which take full advantage of the river’s presence. The 3rd hole, a long par-5, challenges golfers to a fairway bordered by the river on one side, demanding precision from tee to green. The 16th, a picturesque par-3, features a green that juts out into the river, creating a stunning risk-reward scenario.

Wind can play a significant factor at Royal Wellington, adding an extra layer of challenge on this already testing course. The well-thought-out design requires golfers to exhibit both tactical prowess and technical skills, making it a fulfilling challenge for even the most seasoned players.

Royal Wellington Golf Club has hosted numerous national championships, including the New Zealand Open, and is the first golf club in the country to be granted the royal charter by King George V in 1931. The club’s rich history and superb facilities, including a stately clubhouse that reflects its heritage, provide a complete golfing experience that is prestigious yet welcoming.

Playing at Royal Wellington offers more than just a round of golf; it’s an opportunity to partake in a heritage-rich sport where every hole tells a story, and every round enriches your appreciation for the game.
